Warrior of the Month – Rob Wortelboer

“Make your enthusiasm for success stronger than your fear of failure and you will become unstoppable – Martin Rooney”

For most of my life being overweight has been an issue.  Upon entering high school as a Freshmen, I weighed 235 pounds.  I thought by playing football I would not only have fun, but that I would lose weight in the process.  As I entered my sophomore year, I continued to gain weight, which was great for my position on the offensive line, but not so great for my health.  Practices were getting more difficult for me and I knew I was facing an uphill battle. However, I was having so much fun with my Shark teammates that I didn’t think too much about it.

As time went by, I continued to pack on the pounds.  By the time my senior football season came around I weighed in at an all time high of 272 pounds. The great news about playing at that weight was that I was awarded a full ride to play college football.

The not so great news was shortly after I received that scholarship I was injured.  I broke my hand and was not able to practice or lift weights with my team.  This was difficult for me on many levels, but it was the most difficult on my health.  I now weighed in at 282 pounds.  I told myself once I was healed I was going to make a change.  I owed it to myself and those who cared about me the most to get healthy.   That is when I decided to reach out to Training For Warriors.  Little did I know at the time it would be one of the best decisions I would ever make!

Upon meeting with Coach Squats I was anxious, but excited to get started on my journey towards better health.  I remember how hard that first training session was.  Coach Squats told me to take it easy initially, and just get a little bit better each time I came in.  I badly wanted to succeed so I took the meal plan TFW created, and set a goal to show up 4-5 days per week moving forward.  I was motivated by the work ethic my football coaches instilled in me and in addition I was inspired by the TFW Coaches and other students in my group.

I began to change the way I thought about food and TFW helped me realize nutrition had to become a “Way Of Life” not a diet.  I gave up soda, refined sugars and processed foods.  I began to cook my own meals ate more fruits and vegetables and be totally responsible for the food choices I made.  Little by little the weight was melting off.  I dropped 16 pounds in my first 6 weeks and felt great. I absolutely loved the coaching, the accountability and the positive environment at TFW.   I then decided to set a personal goal to get down to 215 lbs by the time I graduated high school in May.

As I am writing this I am so proud to say I achieved that goal and have also lost over 13% body fat and several inches in my hips and waist.  I feel great and have never been in better shape physically.  All the hard work, and discipline has paid off.  I am now prepared both physically and mentally for the next chapter of my life in College and I thanks to TFW my fitness will be a big part of that journey
