Warrior of the Month Juli Hogan

The back of my first TFW shirt says, “When I lost all of my excuses I found my results.” These words accurately describe my fitness journey, although I could substitute “intimidation” or “fear” for “excuses”.

I’ve always been into health and fitness to one degree or another. I worked out several times a week and could eat just about anything I wanted without worry about weight gain. This remained true after having 2 children and moving well into my 30’s. I knew sooner or later it would catch up to me. Life got in the way with 2 boys playing 3 sports each, and a full-time job teaching. When did I have time to eat right or exercise?

Fast forward to my oldest son’s sophomore year of high school when my exercise life changed. Matt played basketball for an AAU team in NJ. Every practice began with an hour of functional strength and agility training. They used a vast array of equipment: kettlebells, dumbbells, med balls, stability balls, bands, TRX, sleds, free weights, etc. etc. The workouts were rigorous and challenging. An adult fitness class worked side by side with the athletes, doing many of the same demanding exercises as these much younger athletes. I was in awe of the kids and even more so of the adults. A simple chain link fence separated the training area from the waiting area where parents like me watched the incredible (and seemingly “crazy”) things these kids and adults were taught to do. I watched these workouts for months. As the end of the school year approached, the owner, Coach Phil, offered a summer special for teachers. There was no excuse to not give it a try. I feared being judged and was definitely intimidated, but I knew I needed to do something meaningful for myself because at that point I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. I mustered the courage to get on the other side of that fence. Once I did, I never looked back. I learned to do things I never thought possible and quickly got in the best shape of my life to that point. I absolutely loved it and the mindset and attitude of the coaching staff kept me coming consistently for 2 years.

Then my husband retired, and we decided to relocate to Florida. One of my biggest concerns was finding a gym that compared to my place in NJ. I had noticed, and my husband pointed out TFW more than once. I wanted to find out more but that familiar fear and intimidation stopped me. I tried a few other gyms, but none were the right fit. I eventually ended up with an injury that sidelined me for almost a year, and the weight piled on. Once again, I was sick and tired of being sick and tired, and I wasn’t getting any younger! That’s when I noticed a TFW magnet on the back of a car driven by my friend and coworker Paige Lange. Paige described her experience and encouraged me to check it out. For the second time in my fitness life I set my fear and intimidation aside and “got on the other side of that fence”. When I met another “Coach Phil” and found out he is originally from NJ, I knew it was a sign! Seeing all the familiar equipment felt like home. After a week, I was hooked and knew I finally found my fit. The Familia is what I’d been looking for and didn’t even know it! The workouts are challenging and rigorous, just like before. Coach Phil and his team are extremely knowledgeable, motivating and just the right amount of crazy!  I’m a bit older yet the results I’ve obtained from TFW far surpass what I accomplished in NJ. Every goal I’ve achieved has been replaced with a new one. The nutrition piece is a game changer. It only took 9 months for me to reach that “magic number” all women have that I never thought I’d see again. Thirty days later I saw it in the review mirror and it continues to fade into the past. I no longer cling to an arbitrary number that somehow defines my self-worth. Recent health issues have left me with body parts that refuse to cooperate, but I refuse to quit. TFW has given me the courage to do things I should fear, like jumping out of an airplane (twice) even though I’m afraid of heights! I really AM the best version of myself (and continue to improve upon that!) thanks to my “Florida Coach Phil”, the incredible TFW coaching staff, and the supportive nature of every one of the Familia!
